  Casco has made a selection of examples of independent publishing initiatives that focus on subjects relating to art, design, social issues, architecture and urbanism, most of which are produced by individuals and collectives without commerical or institutional backing. They demonstrate critical positions, experimental editorial directions, and ways of producing and distributing discourse outside of commercial mainstream channels. In addition we have included some of Casco’s own publications, such as the ongoing magazine, Casco Issues, and Luca Frei’s ‘The so-called utopia of the beaubourg – an interpretation.’ This first English translation of Albert Meister’s 1976 novel describes a fictional counter-cultural space of more than 70 floors, submerged underground beneath the newly erected Centre Pompidou. As with Casco’s selection of publications, the book addresses the importance of alternative spaces and platforms for production and exchange.
