At the 1958 World Expo in Brussels, experimental composer Iannis Xenakis and architect Le Corbusier set a precedent for cross-discipline collaboration in the medium of sound. Le Corbusier designed a pavilion for the Dutch electronics company Philips based on notations for crescendos in Xenakis’s compositions — a literal translation of musical notation into three-dimensional space.
Later, a visual component was brought to the pavilion by Le Corbusier, in conjunction with an experimental electronic piece composed by Edgar Varèse, which produced an all-encompassing experience.
Forms of Inquiry has invited AM/PM and Larytta to showcase two contemporary positions investigating the correlation of sound and the visual arts through the mediums of projected video and live performance music.
