Swiss graphic designers Laurent Benner (accompanied by Jon Hares), Urs Lehni & Lex Trüb and Jürg Lehni (via Skype video) presented recent and self-initiated projects in conversation with Zak Kyes.
Laurent Benner and Jonathan Hares presented The most beautiful Swiss books a catalogue and competition organized by the Federal Office of Culture in Switzerland for the past 65 years. For the past three years Benner and Hares have designed and compiled the catalogue in different ways by employing the same conceptual approach. For every awarded book, a folio of 8 pages was reprinted with the printer who originally produced the book, staying true to the original paper stock of the book. The catalogue for the was then compiled at one of Switzerland’s best bookbinders creating an astonishing juxtaposition of different designs, paper and print qualities.
Urs Lehni and Lex Trüb presented a project for the identity of the Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof, a contemporary art space located in the former first class waiting hall of the Hamburg train station. The concept for the visual identity was influenced by two factors: the distance between Zurich and Hamburg and the budgetary allowance for technical equipment. Instead of creating a static identity, Lehni and Trüb created a ‘graphical tool’ using an OKI C5500, an all-in-one office scanner, fax and printer which has the special ability to print banners up to 120 cm length. By providing the gallery with process-oriented tools such as templates and pre-printed sheets the Kunstverein’s printed matter can be matter can be adapted on-the-fly.
Jürg Lehni participated in the lecture via Skype video from the USA, presenting work related to his contribution to Forms of Inquiry and the project Rita, a mechanical drawing and erasing machine.
